The Oasis of The Holy Family of Nazareth
Chapter 5- Lighter Moments
At times when I was feeling overburdened by the whole experience Jesus and Mary would be light-hearted, almost frivolous. I welcomed these occassions for the relief they
brought. I discovered that Mary's favourite bird is the thrush; that she also loves yellow lilies, whilst Jesus loves roses. In Nazareth Jesus brought wild flowers to her and Joseph. She did weaving and painting, they gave concerts for friends. It was a delightfully
happy home, full of light, love and laughter.
One evening Jesus gave me a description of humour:-
"......humour is there deep inside you and must always ride alongside Love, because it is so much part of Love. Humour is the ability to see sympathy and compassion in the human condition but with an eye that is coloured with light; a light that penetrates into the human soul and draws together all the inconsistencies, its paradoxes, and without understanding the mystery, attempts to feel relieved at the perversity"
On the few occasions when St.John talks to me, and also St. Peter, I have been convinced completely of the reality of the after-life, of Heaven and the Communion of Saints. Through their words, their personality has emerged so forcefully- John, the man of words - Peter, the grumbler, the rather dull, stolid personality despite his moments of rashness, yet also a person who possessed a deep and touching humility. Both men are totally united in their zealous desire to convey the wonder, the charisma of Jesus as they new him.
In the words of St. Peter:-
" I could speak for hours on the subject of Jesus, because his experience in my life was ecstatic, enlightening and totally overwhelming to the extent that he took me by the shoulders and threw me into a world that I did not really want to comprehend. He did this so gently though, and with such charm that I forgot myself and entered into the situation with total enthusiasm. He was the great Master, and one cannot forget the experience even here in Heaven where he exists alongside us now in a totally different capacity.
I think my need to emphasise his humanity comes from the great desire that I have to convey his charisma to you. People talk about charisma as if it were a spell that some possess; Christ's charisma was an entity that spilled over completely and imbued us all with its glow. It was as if we were living in perpetual motion and rest with a figure that lit us up to the centre of our being, with a light that could not be extinguished. The light grew brighter and brighter within us, and part of his charisma transferred itself as it were to us - I in many ways was such a dull personality, rather slow and cumbersome, only enlightene by moments of impetuosity which frightened me more than others.
While we were in Galilee he often pretended that he did not like crowds, and this was so to the extent that physical and mental exhaustion persisted with him at many times. However, his love of people was such that he magnetised the crowds to him., and was as it were in his element when they responded in this way.
His sadness often came over him when he was alone; we were not very good with our comfort because we did not understand the depth of his sorrow. At these moments he would regard us with great sadness and almost plead with his eyes for an understanding. We longed to give this, but really we were such simpletons where all this depth was concerned. Never did he reprimand us however, he was patience itself, and inspired us in fact into great moments of revelation....
Don't ever regard Jesus as someone unapproachable. If you had known him as I did you would see that his approachabilty was the marvelous thing about him, and once approached one did not want to leave him, he had such magnetism and charm. Not in any fairy-tale conception, but in a way that was solid, forceful and completely representative of all that he stood for. You must come to learn to love Jesus the man as closely as you can, because then my dear you will know God. Love Peter."
It was these simple yet illuminating glimpses that helped me to draw closer to them all during the whole experience. I realised, and was relieved to know that Jesus and Mary had lived their life in an utterly, although perfectly, human way. I know that I could never have responded to them as I did without always being aware of their gentleness, loving nature and perhaps, most important to me, their obvious sense of humour.
